The Water Hose Problem
Think of your bringing out your best performance as a plumbing problem. Like a water hose that is clogged up and has several blockages that don’t allow the water to flow as rapidly and forcefully as it is capable of. For emerging runners, that blockage is often the cardio-vascular system. They have not yet built the engine to allow the body to move at the desired pace.

It is also not your strength. If you are doing your strength work together with the running sets, your muscles are able to endure the pace (and the pain!). That too isn’t the blockage that is holding the flow of water back.

Using the first progression of the Effortless Running method™ drills, you will challenge your body and brain to run differently again. This may feel awkward and in workshops, the feedback people use is that it feels weird but not wrong.
Remember that weird is good. You should be happy when it feels a little weird because that means you are doing something different. Note that there will be very little distance to cover in these three weeks as fatigue automatically drops you back to your old running form. We are using these drills and reps to override the running pattern stored in your brain at the moment.

WEEK 2  /  Second Progression Drills and Pace
Week two of the Effortless Running Essentials plan, has a similar structure as week 1 but introduces you to the second progression of the Effortless Running method™ drills. The drills become more advanced and more specific to your new effortless running form. There will be very little distance to cover in this week as well, as you are still implementing a new running form. 

Because the Effortless Running Method targets the muscles instead of the joints, most runners experience some tightness in the calf muscles and hamstrings. It is important to let our bodies grow accustomed to this new way of running before we add volume (distance) back into the program.

From the time I sat around our dinner table with my family as a boy, discussing performance improvement across the myriad of sports I was involved with, I have been obsessed with how we optimize our performance.  From road to trail running and middle distance to ultra's, I have a love for both the science and art of running. As a talented athlete, certified coach, and former Sports Science teacher and coach I have trained thousands of athletes, all with their unique way of running.

What has fascinated me is how some athletes are so fluent and smooth while others are not.  What I noticed was that there is a major shift in competence in running when children go to middle school. Typically, children at a primary school level are quite good runners. Almost effortless. And when they reach the age of a middle-schooler (you know, those awkward in-between years), some continue to keep that effortless running pattern but, sadly, most don’t.

Running becomes a much harder task as the body grows bigger and as society asks you to study more and sit down for longer periods of time.

It is like many of us forget how to run as we grow up.

In fact, it is not like we forget, we actually forget how to run. Passionate about supporting people to enjoy running, I decided to use my analytical skills to define a method to bring ‘lost’ runners back to running properly, running effortlessly. 

For that, I turned to two groups who I know run exceptionally well: East-African runners and primary school children.  

I studied both groups, looked for commonalities and distilled the running forms both groups have into three key elements.

I'm just not made for running. Will this work for me?
Every body is perfectly designed to run! You're struggling with bad running form and your body is giving your feedback. I've got a race in 5 weeks. Can I do it?
Yes you can make the change but fatigue and form don't go well together. So if you have an A-race coming up, you can still implement the Effortless Running Essentials but you will have to gradually phase it in. I've got a plan for that!
How quickly will I see results?
